Last stretch at IIMK

Hardly any classes these days and to top it all, i have just one mid-term exam. There are term papers and assignments to finish but the hockey stick will prevail again. I have gone ahead and chosen Lord of the flies by William Golding for my Leadership term paper. So i would finally get a chance to actually read this good book.

Arthanomics is all set to roll this weekend. The list of speakers is great and this should be another event which would get IIMK great visibility.

Last night was fun with the gang camping down on the lawn at the open air amphitheater at midnight and went on chatting about everything under.......the stars till 2.30. Gautam has finally started the photo collection by snapping all over the campus with his digicam. Some of those pics would definitely make it on these pages in due course of time.

I also plan to start the photo feature about my batch mates once again. Since most of them have already been featured, this blog should see a few new faces making their appearance. Around 40 days left to go, let me try make these last few days interesting!!

News

Its been a week into the new year and the start to the year has been dull. Classes are few and far between. We have 48 days left to sign out of this resort. A lot of things have happened over the last month......some people have got engaged, a lot have landed jobs already, some have started looking at final placements with anticipation and apprehension and for some it has been life as usual.

A few committed souls are working hard to put together an year book for our batch. People have written comments about their batchmates which would be published in the year book. Some articles written by the students would also be published. It would be nice to look at it years down the line and reminisce about the 2 good years spent here.

A lot of events are scheduled during this month at IIMK. The first event scheduled during 15-16 Jan is Arthanomics, the Finance Seminar. IIMK's annual management fest Backwaters is scheduled for the 29-30 of this month. Last years fest had been good fun and this year should be no different. Gautam & i had participated in a lot of events and did far better than we expected at least in the quiz and crossword events.

IIMK's mastermind style quiz 'Prometheus' is also scheduled to start with the prelims on the 10th. I had been lucky to make it to the semis last year. I'm sure a lot of juniors would make it this year.

Christmas @ K

The PGP2's have just another 7 weeks left to pass out so its no surprise that we are hanging on to every opportunity to party. The last two days have been great fun with the christmas party arranged by tity on the 24th eve and the lateral guys party yesterday.

After a relatively easy start to the term, the pace starts to pick up this week with a lot of classes scheduled before a 3 day break during the new year's weekend.

CAT Results

CAT results are out. The IIM's have been pretty quick this year, its hardly been a month since the exam. Some of the results posted on Pagalguy indicate that the IIM's have been quite ruthless this year to anyone with even slightly lesser score in any section. This year's been tough with the changed format as well as tougher selection criteria.

The last term here is dragging on. The hostels and the campus look empty with the juniors having taken off for their term break. am planning to take off to bangalore on the 30th and plan to spend the new yrs eve with friends and family. The motivation to study in this last term has vanished..........actually it was never there in any other term as well ;)).

Leadership

Not many classes this term. The load is also less since this is just a 2 month term. We are done with 3 hours of classes of the course Leadership and this course gets my vote for the best course at IIMK. The passion with which the prof teaches this course is infectious.......one cannot help but hang on to every word that he says.

Today the prof played an audio clip of the famous "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr. I had read the speech many times before but never had realized the force with which it was delivered............the speech was invigorating to say the least. The student presentations start from next class.........another good thing about this course is that we get to read a lot of literature........my group begins the series of presentations with the topic Don Quixote.

This final term is so much fun :)

An eventful start to the 6th Term

We started classes for our final term here on the 14th and it has been a good 2-3 days for me. The elective selection process happened again and i got all the subjects that i needed. The subjects in this term seem so much more interesting than the 5th term subjects. My subjects for the term are

Leadership
Managing creativity
Contemporary issues in marketing
Internet marketing & CRM
Services operation management
Business Intelligence

Classes for only 2 subjects have started so far and i have a lot of free time on my hands for at least the next few days. Leadership looks the best course for this term and the professor, K Unnikrishnan Nair makes it quite interesting.

Lateral placements have been going on for some time now with companies making a beeline to IIMK to get the best available talent. I guess it was my day yesterday.......got a lateral job offer from WNS Global Services . The role offered is exciting and in the area of quality, 6 sigma to be precise. I would probably be placed in pune or mumbai so it should be fun.

This year looks good for IIMK with more than 40 students with job offers even before the final placement starts in february. Hope these good times continue.

5 terms down.....1 to go

Phew......the exams are finally over and another term has come to an end. Just one term left now to pass out. We have a term break till 12th. I'm still stuck here as there are a few assignments that need to be completed. D-mid is completely deserted except for the juniors........and Tiga but i dont think i will get to see him much as he gets up at a time when i'm about to sleep ;). Another couple of days and then i'm off to bangalore as well.

This term has been pathetic. The subjects were boring except for Intenational Business & Software Engineering. The marketing subjects this term have been a huge disappointment, Sales & Distribution Management was the only subject which was okay. At least the Social Development Project is almost done, i'm sure it will be wrapped up by January.

ITC MGMD

ITC MGMD contest ended on a great note. My team lost in the end but it was great fun all the same. A bit of the whole story in pictures depicted below:

The Judges

The winners

Runners up team

Me with Team Swadesi

Team GDP

Team GDP with snazzy certificates

The team 'Kites' consisting of Chittaranjan, Krishnan & Deepak won for their b-plan on organic farming & the team of Varun, Jasleen & Shailendra finished a strong second for their plan on virgin coconut oil. most of the plans were great and it was such a learning experience to sit through all of them. Two teams from the first year were also selected and both of them had come up with great plans as well. IIMK also had the distinction of the most number of b-plans submitted among all the participating b-schools and the ITC chaps seemed pretty impressed by the enthusiasm shown.

Anyway, end terms from 1st to 4th and a term break from 5th to 12th. Cant wait for the break to start now. 5/6th of a MBA almost done........a sobering thought.

Horizons

The annual management seminar of IIM K, HORIZONS is scheduled to be held on the 27th & the 28th of this month. This year's theme is "Changing Times - Changing Paradigms"

The Horizons team members from the second year are a motley bunch ranging from Krishnan being the topper of the batch to Vipul, who is one of the funniest guys on campus.

Horizons Team - 2nd Year

Vipul Kumar Patheja Shailendra Rana G.Krishnan

Ruchi Gupta Anuj Mittal

I guess i will not be able to attend the seminar as i would be tied up with the ITC presentations. The ITC presentations have been split into two days with 4 presentations being done on the 27th evening & the rest on the 28th morning. My team is up second on the 27th. Heres wishing all the teams the best.

Term 5 almost finished

One of the tougher weeks this term ended today with Retail and Franchising coming to an end. The prof had made us do a lot of presentations peppered with theoretical concepts by him & frankly i wondered where all this was leading. However things are a lot more clearer now about the retail industry, the major palyers & how they operate. Not a bad course.

The ITC mera gaon mera desh business plan contest is in the limelight with their posters all over campus. The presentations are scheduled to be held at IIM K on the 28th morning. The dateline indicates that the campus presentations have already finished at the Delhi B-schools and IIM Lucknow. Wonder what happened there!!

This term has been tiring & i cant wait for it to finish soon, and the sooner the better.
